Question: Hi Valentina. My daughter is about to turn 13 and she already has some hair on her upper lip. She said she has been teased at school about it and I am worried. Is she too young to get her lip waxed?
Valentina: The teen years are tough, I think more so than they were when I was growing up. The fact that I have seen more young teens coming to the spa for waxing, acne treatments, and facials tells me that today, more than ever, teens are very conscious of their physical appearance.
First understand that your daughter is not alone. Many young girls begin to develop facial hair early in life; it is nothing to be ashamed of. If it is so noticeable that it embarrasses her, definitely start her on a waxing regimen. I do not recommend any other form of hair removal for young girls. Depilatory creams are too harsh on the skin as is bleaching. She is too young for electrolysis or laser. Waxing is the right solution because it will remove the hair for weeks at a time, and over the next few years, less hair will begin to grow back. By the time she is an adult, she will have to wax very little to keep the area clean.
Talk to your daughter about waxing as a solution to removing the hair. Be sure that she is comfortable. I recommend that you prepare her for what her appointment will be like, or first bring her in for a consultation with a professional so she may ask any questions she has.
Will it hurt? A little. Will she be red? A little. If you live in the Monmouth County NJ area, make an appointment to see me at Aquamedica Spa.
